How they started:
Tokio Hotel created by Bill Kaulitz (vocals) and Tom Kaulitz (guitar), who are twin brothers, Gustav Schäfer (drums) and Georg Listing (bass). The four met at a concert in a Magdeburg club, where Listing and Schäfer, who knew from music school to go, watched as Bill and Tom Kaulitz played on the stage.
Under the name Devilish, the band soon began to do small gigs. After Bill Kaulitz's participation in a children's TV talent search program (Star Search) in 2003 at age 13 (where he lost in the semifinals), was discovered by music producer Peter Hoffmann. The Devilish changed their name to Tokio Hotel: "Tokio", so written in the German city of Tokyo in Japan, because he loves the city and "Hotel" because, due to constant touring their live almost permanently in hotels.
Shortly after the Sony BMG ended contract with them, Hoffmann hired David Jost and Pat Bezner the production team and writing, and suggested the young to learn how to write songs and play music. Most of the songs of their first album written by Hoffmann, the Jost and Benzer (along with their singles Schrei Rette Mich and had written entirely by the three of them), only single Unendlichkeit was written only by Tokio Hotel. Nevertheless, shortly before the release of their first album, Sony terminated their contract.
